The fourth edition of the region’s premier bus exhibition, Busworld Southeast Asia 2026, successfully concluded in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta. Held from May 20 to 22, the event underscored Indonesia’s growing strategic role as the beating heart of the bus manufacturing and development sector within the ASEAN ecosystem.
This year’s exhibition achieved remarkable success and drew broad international participation, bringing together 47 exhibitors representing 9 countries, and attracting 5,133 registered visitors from 41 countries worldwide. The exhibition booths spanned an area of nearly 8,000 square meters, showcasing 25 state-of-the-art vehicles that highlighted the latest technologies in mass transit.
Ultimate Luxury and Rapid Electrification
The exhibition halls highlighted a radical shift in the demands of the Southeast Asian transport market, focusing heavily on comfort and the passenger experience. High-end seat designs, premium interiors, and sleeper coaches—which are experiencing surging demand—stole the spotlight. Long-distance operators are increasingly adopting premium travel classes that rival airline and rail services by offering private sleeping cabins.
On the green transition front, electric mobility solutions established a powerful presence in this year’s edition. Chinese brands made a notable impact by introducing new “Higer” and “Golden Dragon” bus models to the Indonesian market. Among the event’s biggest highlights was local manufacturer “Laksana” unveiling its new electric bus, the Legacy SR3 Neo Panorama, built on a “Hyundai Elec City” chassis. This marks the first official fully-electric bus dedicated to an Indonesian sports club—the Persija Jakarta Football Club—reflecting the integration of clean energy into luxury transport sectors.
International Partnerships and Excellence Awards
Parallel to the exhibition, an extensive conference program featured more than 40 regional and international experts and speakers. Discussions focused on safety, digitalization, electrification, and the export capabilities of local bodybuilders in global markets. The program also included field visits for international delegations—including land transport officials from Malaysia—to the TransJakarta electric bus network, one of the world’s largest Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems, serving over a million passengers daily.
In a gesture to encourage innovation and design, excellence awards were presented based on widespread voting by the bus manufacturing community and enthusiasts on social media:
- The “Bus of the Year” award went to the SDD Jetbus 5 model by PT Adiputro Wirasejati.
- Piala Mas clinched both the “Most Favorite Bus” and “Most Attractive Bus” awards for its All New Rexus 8Dmodel.
- Other companies, including PT Laksana and PT Tentrem Sejahtera, won excellence awards for electric design and futuristic luxury.
Looking Ahead
Reflecting on the success of the event, Vincent Dewaele, General Manager of Busworld International, stated:
“The growth of the exhibition was tangible in every aisle, with exhibitors and visitors alike agreeing that this edition was more dynamic, international, and complete. Indonesia and the region possess immense potential, and we are ready for the next phase.”
The capital city of Jakarta is set to welcome global decision-makers and bus industry professionals once again for the next edition, scheduled for May 2028.
